Clock Out was written in 2020 remotely for Distractfold (contemporary music ensemble) during one of the UK lockdowns. The electronics are made up of recordings of clocks found by the members of the group and the composer, with different meanings and contexts. For example, one of the clocks is from a Polish clock shop, where one of the performers spent much time exploring.
Time is presented in the form of emptiness, endlessness, acceptance, and frustration.
I created this piece to evoke these feelings felt by me and so many other people during lockdown. We gained endless time but lost work, livelihood and often the human connection so important for mental health and general wellbeing.
Thanks to Distractfold (Linda Jankowska, Alice Purton, and Daniel Brew)
